The Ambo Farmers Cooperative Union (AFCU) recently welcomed journalists from Ethiopia’s leading newspapers, Addis Zemen and Barisa, to observe our ongoing hybrid maize seed production program in Siba Biche Kebele. The visit showcased the incredible progress being made to improve agricultural productivity, strengthen local food security, and elevate the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.
Cultivating Growth: The Numbers Behind the Success
Our seed multiplication program is designed to integrate smallholder farmers into commercial seed production. This season’s progress is a testament to the hard work of our community:
184 smallholder farmers organized and participating.
160 hectares of land actively cultivated with high-yield BH-661 hybrid maize seed.
4,500+ quintals of certified hybrid maize seed expected this harvest season.
Field observations confirm that the crops are performing exceptionally well, with excellent production potential that will directly help meet Ethiopia’s growing demand for improved maize seeds.

One of the biggest hurdles for smallholder farmers is the initial cost of inputs and the unpredictability of the market. AFCU has successfully bridged this gap through a comprehensive support system:
Input Financing: AFCU supplies approximately 80% of the required agricultural inputs—including improved seeds, fertilizers, and crop protection chemicals—through a credit arrangement. This ensures farmers get what they need, exactly when they need it, without the burden of immediate upfront payments.
100% Guaranteed Market: We purchase 100% of the certified maize seed produced by our participating farmers. Once harvested, AFCU cleans, processes, certifies, packages, and distributes the seed nationwide.
By removing marketing risks and providing continuous technical assistance, farmers can focus entirely on what they do best: producing high-quality yields.
